5/17/2023 0 Comments Sleep no more sixth floor![]() ![]() Do I give the show a full pass for fixing this problem FIVE FUCKING YEARS into its run? I do not. De Winter material in the Superior Boston Production of Sleep No More but this new material did wonders to alleviate one of my biggest criticisms of the New York show. I’ve made no secret of my opinion that the Naismith storyline has, in the past, felt like a half-assed whitewash of the Second Mrs. The material with Virginia Logan’s Caroline, also, was absolutely phenomenal. ![]() I cannot remember the last time I felt that invested in what I was doing at the show, and it was great to get some of that back. The one on one, and what happened after that, were also great. I sat in the igloo for about 30 minutes, watching the action, examining the materials, and marveling at the sound design. The fifth floor igloo is fantastic, and Louis Butelli was doing really compelling work in there. I’m not going to pretend that the show is as good as it has ever been or that there were no dud performances, but I did get a baseline sense of competence from the proceedings, and that was a good place to start. I haven’t enjoyed seeing Sleep No More that much since, at least, 2012 when I found Hecate’s ring. So, the deal is this: I really enjoyed myself. If you are the sort of person who feels personally offended when someone talks about how the show used to be better when it had either certain performers in the cast or existed in a certain city about a three hour train ride to the northeast of New York then you’ll be best served by not reading any further. Spoilers for some of the new-ish content in the show appear below.Ģ. With brunch done it was time to RE-RELIVE THE MAGIC and I must now post some warnings:ġ. Brunch itself was big on atmosphere and okay on food - I’ve never had better chicken and waffles in a faux ski lodge setting, so there’s that. One of my highest class problems is that I know too many awesome people in New York City.) I was a little bummed that our table at brunch was set up, essentially, like The Last Supper or The Sleep No More Banquet, and seven of us were seated on one side of a table - it made having a full group conversation essentially impossible and it was too early in the day for everyone to make out in slow motion. I announced to my RE-RELIVING THE MAGIC compatriot that I was both overtired and that my ankle was still bothering me from twisting it at exercise class on Friday and that my overall tolerance for jabronis in the audience was at an all-time fucking low.īefore the show there was brunch at The Lodge, also with awesome people (different awesome people, but awesome people nonetheless. ![]() I went to the matinee show, because that seemed like the worst possible idea because Sleep No More seems, to me, to be so very much a nighttime show (also: it allowed me to get a train back to Boston at 7pm and still go to work on Monday) but I wonder if my having barely slept the night before due to various factors (early work call time and a night out after The Grand Paradise getting some beers with awesome people that went way later than I had planned) made the show feel like nighttime. But I knew there was new stuff, and new spaces, and I found myself very curious about all of that - I was basically *all set* with Sleep No More after RELIVE THE MAGIC weekend back in 2014 but just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in. Not gonna lie, gang: I was fully expecting to attend yesterday’s showing of Sleep No More and then proceed to come on the internet and talk all about how the new content is lame and how the show is lame and it should have closed at whatever I have randomly decided is the last high point it had. ![]()
